A lady's guide to being bad in The City of Lights? Oh, Yes!
We interviewed Heather about her new erotic Paris guide made just for the modern lady.
Paris is known as many things: the city of love and follies not being the least of them.
If a lady coming to Paris wants to get an insider's view on being naughty in The City of Lights, then where would she look? While there is ample information on the internet, it's strewn about in an uncohesive mess. Now, though, you need no longer spend hours searching online: you simply pick up a copy of Heather's new 'Sexy City' guide to Paris.
I contacted Heather for an interview about her new guide: Naughty Paris - a lady's guide to the sexy city. In a question and response format she highlighted not only her book, but a bit about herself and how she's come to be in Paris as well.
Interview:
- Q: What first brought you to Paris, and how long have you been here?
- A: I came to Paris as a university student in 1995 (I studied Political Science at the University of Paris), and moved here permanently in 1997.

- Q: What do you do for a living such that it lets you live in Paris?
- A: I'm a travel guide writer and own a Paris-based company that does private tours and guidebook publishing.

- Q: What is your favorite non-naughty thing to do in Paris?
- A: Eating macaroons at Ladurée! ;) Seriously, I wrote the Naughty Paris Guide as a journalist, not as an "hibituée" of the lifestyle, but the ladies' nights at Régine's are quite fun.

- Q: What inspired you to write a book about 'Naughty Paris'?
- A: I've had a newsletter and website called Secrets of Paris since 1999, and a lot of my readers kept requesting the information. I realized guides of this sort only existed in French, so there was a good motivation to publish an English version.

- Q: Why include the expression 'A Lady's Guide'...? What is meant by that?

- A: The guide is written by a woman for women, and by someone who is curious, daring, and interested in having fun, but NOT already "into" the sex club lifestyle. It's for women who don't consider themselves the "type" to go to adult toy shops or cabaret shows, and makes it accessible for them.

- Q: How long did the research take?
- A: Three years! I was trying to fit in the time to do it between other guidebook projects that paid. Since I decided to publish the Naughty Paris Guide myself, I won't be making any money from it until it's sold!

- Q: During the research process did you ever need to go anywhere you would have rather not? Or, when you got somewhere realized you didn't like?
- A: There were quite a few places that didn't get into the guide because the "ick" factor was too high. Still, I tried to remain open-minded; as a journalist I often go to places I would rather not! (laughs) I try to keep the readers' needs in mind.

- Q: Do you share your negative reviews along with positive in your book? e.g. What to hit, and what to avoid?
- A: The book is meant to be fun and entertaining, even if you never travel to Paris. There are entire sections on what it means to be a Parisian woman, how to capture her unique allure, what French men are like, the history of Naughty Paris, flirting vocabulary, and recommended reading and films. I left out the things I didn't think fit the theme or the standards of "female friendly", so I don't think the negative reviews are necessary.

- Q: Have you looked into the 'naughty' side of any other cities as well? Such as NY, or San Francisco? If so, did you find that they're similar to Paris, or different? In what ways?
- A: I know about them only from afar, so I couldn't comment as an expert. But the US in general is a very different vibe than France. We're still very puritan in the US, so the sexiness is very covered up like it's a shameful thing. For example, sex toy shops in Paris are right next to other regular shops, with big windows showing what's inside. You don't have that in the US!

- Q: Have you found that Paris has anything in particular that one just can't find in any other city that you're aware of?
- A: Heh heh: Parisians! It's really the whole atmosphere of Paris that makes it such a sexy place for women, a combination of many things from the fashion and food and architecture to the history and language and the way Parisians live. There's nothing like it elsewhere, but it's also indescribable. A certain je ne sais quoi, as the oft-repeated phrase goes!

- Q: If you had to pick one thing from your book as your favorite, what/where would it be?
- A: I love so many things in the guide, but I think it's just the overall look that makes me so excited. The photo and illustrations are really beautiful, so this is a book you can read in public without being embarrassed! Kirsten Loop of Loop Photography did the photo shoots for the guide, and theBookDesigners did the cover and interior design.
